Lawmakers press Obama on China auto parts (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Midwestern lawmakers and union groups on Tuesday urged President Barack Obama to restrict imports of auto parts from China that they said benefited from massive illegal subsidies and threatened hundreds of thousands of American jobs.

"We need to stand up to the bully on the block," said Senator Debbie Stabenow, a Michigan Democrat, referring to Beijing. "The bully on the block continues to take our lunch money and we need to stop that."

The push for the administration to bring a possible case at the World Trade Organization or begin a U.S. Commerce Department investigation that could lead to duties on Chinese-made auto parts came one week after Obama said he was creating a new Trade Enforcement Unit to crack down on unfair foreign trade practices in China and other countries around the world.

It could create further strains in the U.S.-China relationship as Obama is preparing to host Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, who is expected to be China's next leader, at the White House on February 14.

"We must be aggressive on trade enforcement - especially as China ramps up subsidies in strategic industries like auto parts, said Senator Sherrod Brown, an Ohio Democrat.

"Today, we're providing the president with his first opportunity to deliver on the promise to guarantee a level playing field," said Scott Paul, president of the American Alliance for Manufacturing, whose members include the United Steelworkers union and steel companies.

A U.S. trade official stopped short of committing to action on the issue, but said the Obama "administration will not stand by when our competitors don't play by the rules."

"We will continue to identify and address unfair trade practices to ensure ... U.S. workers and companies can compete and succeed on a level playing field," the official said on condition of anonymity.

The groups released studies prepared by the labor-backed Economic Policy Institute and the Stewart and Stewart law firm that cataloged Chinese government subsidies and practices that they said violated WTO rules and threatened jobs at many small- and medium-sized U.S. auto parts manufacturers.

"If these policies are not stopped, by the end of the decade, China could seize 50 percent or more of our auto parts market, costing hundreds of thousands of American jobs," said Terence Stewart, Stewart and Stewart's managing partner, which specializes in cases against allegedly unfair imports.

Last year, the United States ran a deficit of nearly $10 billion in auto parts trade with China.

SUBSIDIES FROM CHINESE

The EPI study estimated the Chinese auto parts industry has received $27.5 billion in government subsidies since 2001, helping to fuel U.S. auto parts imports from China.

Although American auto companies have experienced a turnaround since the U.S. government prevented the industry from collapsing in 2009, the auto parts sector has regained only about 60,000 in the past two years and has lost more than 400,000 over the past eleven years, the EPI study said.

Large Chinese government subsidies were the second major cause of the lost jobs, behind competition from Mexico, Bob King, president of the United Auto Workers union, said in a statement.

He also noted many Chinese auto workers "work for the same multinational corporations as we do" and urged "global corporations to refrain from a 'race to the bottom' to find workers that they can pay the least."

GM is currently the market share leader in China, which overtook the United States in 2009 to become the world's largest auto market. Ford has been playing catchup by opening plants and dealerships.

Unlike other foreign automakers in China, U.S. car companies have "cut ties with (auto parts) suppliers in the United States or have encouraged them to manufacture there," EPI said.

GM spokesman Greg Martin said the company has "a sourcing process that leverages the scale of a global supply base and takes into consideration total enterprise cost, quality and technology."

Beijing angered Washington in December with a decision to impose punitive duties of up to 22 percent on large cars and SUVs from the United States, a move that many saw as retaliation for earlier U.S. moves to restrict imports of Chinese goods ranging from tires to poultry.

The Obama administration is now considering whether to slap anti-dumping and countervailing duties on solar panels and wind energy towers from China in response to U.S. industry allegations of unfair trading practices.

Egypt's military considers speeding up transition (AP)

CAIRO ? A spokesman for an advisory body to Egypt's military rulers says the army is studying ways to accelerate the transition to civilian rule, including moving up the timetable for presidential elections.

Mohammed El-Kholy said Monday the panel of civilian advisers wants to "ease the tension" following street protests on the anniversary of last year's uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak, leaving the generals in charge.

The protesters want an immediate end to military rule, and accuse the army of mismanaging the transition and committing human rights violations.

El-Kholy says one suggestion is to hold presidential elections earlier than by the end of June ? the military's current schedule.

Activists say the new proposals could inflame tensions because they squeeze the time allotted for drafting a new constitution.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

CAIRO (AP) ? An Egyptian security official says gunmen have stormed the branch of a major international bank and robbed an armored car in separate parts of Cairo.

The official said that seven gunmen charged Monday into the New Cairo branch of HSBC Bank on the city's outskirts, firing their weapons in the air, and took money from tellers.

The same day, he said, three gunmen robbed an armored car as it unloaded money at another bank in southern Cairo, fleeing with over 3 million Egyptian pounds ($542,000 dollars).

He spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to the media.

Armed bank robberies are rare in Egypt. Monday's daring daytime raids come amid reduced police deployments following the uprising that forced President Hosni Mubarak from power last year.

It's crunch time for debate over 'leap second'

It's high noon for the humble leap second.

After 10 years of talks, governments are headed for a showdown vote this week on an issue that pits technological precision against nature's whims.

The United States, France and others are pushing for countries at a U.N. telecom meeting to abolish the leap second, which for 40 years has kept computers in sync with the Earth day.

Leap seconds are necessary to prevent atomic clocks from speeding ahead of solar time. They are added at irregular intervals, effectively stretching atomic time by a heartbeat to make up for the irregular wobble in the Earth's rotation.

Critics warn that scrapping the leap second would break the last link between the passing of time and the course of the sun across the sky. But backers say machines shouldn't any longer be tethered to the imprecise cycle of sunrise and sunset.

"This would be an important decision because the problem of introducing the leap second would disappear and we would have a more steady time than we have today," Vincent Meens, an official at the International Telecommunication Union who has chaired technical talks on the issue, said Tuesday.

Operators of cell phone networks, financial markets and air traffic control systems could then rely on the near-absolute precision offered by atomic clocks without having to worry about stopping their systems for the length of a heartbeat every year or two.

"Most of the people who operate time services favor discontinuing leap seconds," said Judah Levine, a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder, Colo.

"The main problem is that the leap second is usually implemented by stopping the clock for one second. However, the world doesn't stop," he said.

Satellite navigation systems such as GPS don't use leap seconds, which adds confusion, said Levine. "In addition, the leap second occurs in the middle of the day in Asia and Australia, which is particularly inconvenient."

In a world increasingly reliant on computers for mission-critical measurements, any glitch could be costly as well as fatal, said Elisa Felicitas Arias, director of the time department at the Paris-based International Bureau of Weights and Measures.

"You can make a dramatic error if, for example, you are trying to land an aircraft," she said, noting that rocket launches, too, are never scheduled on days when a leap second might occur. "This is something we are trying to correct."

Critics say the risks are overblown and leap seconds have been used successfully since 1972, despite being hard to predict more than six months in advance.

China has warned that any change could hurt astronomers, who need to be able to compare observations spanning thousands of years as part of their work.

Canada, too, has raised objections to the proposed plan, while Britain has warned that it could spell the end of Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT, as a meaningful measure.

"Leap seconds are an inconvenience to the telecommunications people, but there are many other users of time who should be considered," said Ken Seidelmann, a research professor at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and former director of astrometry at the U.S. Naval Observatory.

Killing off the leap second would also result in atomic clocks slowly outrunning the solar day by a rate of about 90 seconds a century. After many thousands of years, atomic clocks would say it's midday when outside the sun has yet to rise.

"This is replacing a small problem with a big problem further down the line," said Daniel Gambis, an astronomer at the Paris Observatory and the man who alerted timekeepers around the world to the next leap second, due on June 30.

Arias said solutions could be found for such problems, but conceded that severing the link between the proposed new standard time ? as measured by atomic clocks ? and the solar time people are accustomed to might seem troubling to many.

Still, the time for change has come, she argued.

Unless a last minute consensus is reached, delegates at the ITU meeting in Geneva are expected to vote on the issue Thursday or Friday.

Philbin rejoins Packers 2 days after son's funeral (AP)

GREEN BAY, Wis. ? Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin will rejoin the Green Bay Packers for Sunday's divisional playoff game against the New York Giants after spending the week away from the team to mourn the death of his son.

A Packers spokesman says Philbin and the team decided Sunday morning that he would coach in the game. CBS Sports first reported Saturday that Philbin would have a role with the team.

The body of 21-year-old Michael Philbin was recovered from an icy river in Oshkosh on Monday. A preliminary autopsy found that he drowned. Several Packers players and coaches attended a visitation Thursday and the funeral service Friday.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said earlier this week that the team was giving Philbin as much time as he needed to be with his family.

After encampment ends, NYC Occupiers become nomads (AP)

NEW YORK ? It was only a few nights after the Occupy protesters began sleeping in his church sanctuary when the Rev. Bob Brashear realized that his laptop was missing.

The refugees from Manhattan's Zuccotti Park had found their way to his cavernous Presbyterian church on a cold winter evening, hoping to stay for a few nights, maybe longer. It was the latest stopover for the nomadic group, which has been living in a rotating series of churches since the city shut down its camp in November.

"There was a sense of shock and sadness that it had happened," said Brashear, whose laptop will soon be replaced by Occupy organizers. "And there's a common understanding that if there's one more theft in the church, that's it."

This is what the Occupy encampment has become: a band of homeless protesters with no place to go. Amid accusations of drug use and sporadic theft, they've been sleeping on church pews for weeks, consuming at least $20,000 of the donations that Occupy Wall Street still has in its coffers. Their existence is being hotly debated at Occupy meetings: Are these people truly "Occupiers" who deserve free food and a roof over their heads?

"We don't do this out of charity," said 34-year-old Ravi Ahmad, who works for Columbia University and volunteers with Occupy in her spare time. "We do this so that whoever wants to work in the movement can work in the movement. This is a meritocracy."

But money is draining rapidly from Occupy's various bank accounts, which currently amount to about $344,000. Including church maintenance costs and meals, living expenses are more than $2,000 per week.

"We are all aware that the NYPD destroyed the tent homes of many Occupiers in just one night," someone recently wrote on http://www.nycga.net, Occupy's General Assembly website for New York City. "However, where were they living before Zuccotti Park? Are we paying for housing for homeless people who may be relocated to City shelters?"

The movement, which denounces corporate excess and economic inequality, has been fighting to stay afloat in the city where it began. Media attention and donations have dropped off. And although protesters regularly meet to plan demonstrations, recent marches have had none of the spectacle that captivated New Yorkers and watchers worldwide.

On Monday, the metal barricades surrounding Zuccotti Park were removed for the first time since the November raid. But protesters still can't set up tents to camp overnight ? and they don't have a long-term solution to the housing problem.

Their current home is Brashear's West-Park Presbyterian Church, a stately 100-year-old house of worship on the Upper West Side that badly needs renovation. Occupy organizers see the cracks in the ceiling as an opportunity to repay the favor by helping to fix the place up.

There are about 70 Occupiers staying there and another 30 or so at Park Slope United Methodist Church in Brooklyn.

"Everybody tries to get along, make things work," said Donna Marinelli, 52, of New Britain, Conn., who was sitting on the floor in a sleeping bag alongside her cousin, David Monarca. "We were in the park in tents until they raided us. We wanted to stay for the movement. We didn't want to leave when we just got here."

During the daylight hours, Marinelli attends Occupy events and volunteers at an Occupy kitchen in Brooklyn. Nobody is allowed to stay in the church during the day. At night, the place is patrolled by an Occupy security team led by Marine Corps Sgt. Halo Showzah, a 27-year-old Iraq war veteran from the Bronx.

"We walk around the church with flashlights, making noise to wake these people up and making sure they're good," he said. "No sex in the church, no drinking, no smoking, no shooting, no sniffing."

The church was quiet and cozy Wednesday night as about two dozen people staked out their respective corners of the room. Some prefer the balcony; others like to curl up by the door. Someone fiddled around on the piano and sang a few songs as a cat watched from a pew. Showzah wandered around and chatted with everyone, making jokes and doling out advice to the singer.

The security threat is very real here. At least 30 percent of the crowd is a mix of chronically homeless, drug-addicted people, some of whom suffer from "psychological issues," as several protesters put it. Among other rules, the pastor has demanded that the Occupiers station at least one mental health expert "within easy reach" of the church every night.

Even some of the church dwellers themselves are fed up with their fellow pew mates. Chris Allen, 36, is working on a backup plan in case they get kicked out.

"I feel people are messing up the church and we're not going to have it much longer, so I'm worried about putting money in my pocket," said Allen, an unemployed construction worker from Long Island who lives here with his wife. "Because when it snows and I have nowhere to go, I'm not going to be stuck on the streets like everyone else for being idiots."

Who is allowed to stay at the church is a source of contention and perpetual infighting. If you're not on the official list kept by Occupy organizers, you're not allowed inside. But it's unclear what distinguishes the general populace from an Occupier.

One night in December, police officers were called to the Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew when people who weren't on the list came to the door and refused to leave.

"I was turned away one night in the cold and rain," said David Everitt-Carlson, a 55-year-old unemployed former advertising executive who lived in a teepee at Zuccotti Park. "And I slept at Grand Central Station. I found a place behind a Christmas decoration."

About a month ago, a telephone hotline was set up so people could call and request a spot at one of the churches. But space is limited. And each church sojourn has an expiration date.

Some churches willingly opened their doors to provide temporary shelter after the police raid. None of them are equipped to house protesters forever.

"It's a lot of wear and tear on the space," said Michael Ellick, a minister at Judson Memorial Church, which housed protesters for several nights in November. "We're broke, so we don't have a custodial staff. We can't be a full-time housing unit."

During daylight hours, some people migrate down to Occupy's atrium at 60 Wall St., while others head off to hunt for jobs or disappear into the city. At night, there are often counselors on hand for emotional support.

Typical arguments are reminiscent of life at Zuccotti, which had its own share of criminal activity. A frequent complaint, for example, involves a man who apparently never takes showers.

"No fistfights, no weapons involved," said Jeff Brewer, 34, an Occupy organizer. "I believe there was a shampoo bottle that was thrown one time."

Meals are donations from food pantries and leftovers dropped off by nearby restaurants. Occupy's financial donations mostly come in small amounts from private donors, who can funnel money through a myriad of online payment services.

The debate over providing food and shelter for the church Occupiers plays into a larger one that has divided New York's protesters ever since the police raid. While some are determined to occupy another space somewhere in the city, others say an encampment is unnecessary and, at its worst, a burden.

The church dwellers believe they are carrying the torch for the lost encampment ? and that, someday, they will form the foundation of a new one.

"We really have been calling it the `Occupiers army' that we are building," explained protester Jason Harris, a teacher from Massachusetts.

First, though, they'll have to find a way to survive the winter. Brashear hasn't yet decided whether he will allow the protesters to stay at West-Park beyond next week. If they are truly dedicated to forming a community ? and not simply seeking shelter within the church's walls ? he'll be more willing to extend their unspoken lease.

"It's a sort of sink or swim situation," he said. "I think, long-term, they have to make a decision about what, exactly, their movement is about."

Man detained after another Calif. homeless killing (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Mourners wept and placed flowers Saturday at the scene of the latest stabbing death of a homeless man in Orange County, and people who knew the victim said he had feared for his safety as police recently sought a serial killer suspected in the slayings.

Police detained Itzcoatl Ocampo, 23, in connection with Friday night's killing in Anaheim but investigators didn't say if there were any links between that killing and the deaths of three other homeless men.

Friday's victim, described by friends as a Vietnam War veteran in his 60s named John, was found between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the parking lot of a Carl's Jr. fast-food restaurant at the intersection of La Palma Avenue and Imperial Highway in Anaheim, police said.

Marilyn Holland, an Anaheim resident who befriended the victim and regularly brought him oatmeal raisin cookies, said he was uncharacteristically nervous since police warned him to stay vigilant in the days after the killings began.

"He told me he thought he was being followed," Holland said. "I told him after pay day I was going to get him a cell phone, so he could call 911 if anything happened. Normally he would refuse help but he was willing to accept the phone because he was scared." Holland was paid Friday but never got the phone to her friend.

Several witnesses reported an assault in progress, and officers arrived to find the homeless man dead near a trash bin in the restaurant parking lot. Witnesses followed a man who ran from the lot and led police to him, Anaheim police Sgt. Bob Dunn said.

"We were having dinner in the area and saw about 40 police cars scream into the parking lot. I ran over and hugged my friend, screaming, `Please tell me it's not John!' But it was," Holland said, fighting back tears.

Police set up a large containment area at the crime scene in a search for the killer and scoured nearby neighborhoods, including a mobile home park, Dunn said.

Ocampo, of nearby Yorba Linda, was held without bail for suspicion of murder, Dunn said.

A police bloodhound later traced the scent from Ocampo's belongings back to the scene where the attack occurred, about 10 miles northeast of the Disneyland Resort, authorities said.

A task force of law enforcement officers from Anaheim, Placentia, Brea, Orange County Sheriff's Department and the FBI was formed to investigate the killings of three other homeless men found stabbed to death in north Orange County since mid-December.

James Patrick McGillivray, 53, was killed near a shopping center in Placentia on Dec. 20; Lloyd Middaugh, 42, was found near a riverbed trail in Anaheim on Dec. 28; and Paulus Smit, 57, was killed outside a Yorba Linda library on Dec. 30.

Police suspect all three were victims of a serial killer. It was not known if the latest death was connected to the other killings, but the task force is investigating any possible links.

Authorities declined to speculate if Ocampo was behind the earlier homeless slayings, but Anaheim Deputy Chief Craig Hunter acknowledged that "in a very general sense" he matched the physical description of a person suspected in the killings.

Police had released grainy photographs captured from surveillance video that show a male suspect dressed in dark clothing. A white, late-model Toyota Corolla was also a vehicle of interest.

Authorities planned an afternoon press conference to discuss the details of the case and the arrest.

"We're hopeful that they've got the right guy," said Larry Haynes, executive director of Mercy House, which provides services for the homeless in Orange County. "But until we know if the right person was arrested, we will maintain our vigilance to ensure safety. We are still calling on people who are living out on the streets to come inside tonight."

Haynes said Mercy House shelters had stepped up security in recent weeks and would continue to do so until police say the threat is over.

Friends of the latest victim lit candles Saturday and made plans to start a fund to give the latest victim a proper burial. They described him as a kind, quiet man who chose a life on the streets.

"He never asked for anything. We'd offer him rooms but he lived the life of a homeless man," said Yvonne Miranda, who said the victim spent most of his time in the parking lot where he was killed. "He was in his comfort zone. This is where he felt safe."

Police and advocates have been urging those living on the streets to head inside or buddy up in the wake of the killings.

Earlier Friday, the Orange County sheriff's deputies union announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

HBO says no political agenda behind Palin film (AP)

PASADENA, Calif. ? In a politically polarized country, the people behind HBO's upcoming movie on Sarah Palin's vice presidential campaign are being careful not to take one side or the other.

Danny Strong, writer of the film "Game Change," said at a news conference Friday that "there is no agenda here."

"Game Change" debuts March 10. It is based on John Heilemann and Mark Halperin's book about the 2008 presidential campaign, but focuses specifically on Palin. Director Jay Roach said he sought Palin's input for the film but was rebuffed.

Actress Julianne Moore looks strikingly like Palin in her depiction of the former Alaska governor.

6 NBA Teams That Monta Ellis Could Be Traded To

This is one of those trades that makes total sense, but because of the huge names involved, it will never go down.?Of course, in today's NBA, never say never.

New York Knicks' coach Mike D'Antoni does well with high-octane offenses that put a premium on fast play and hard work. Is there a player that better personifies that than Monta Ellis?

The Knicks sorely lack a shooting guard, and Ellis could even fill in at the point until Baron Davis is healthy.

What's the deal that could make it happen? Prepare yourself...

Ellis and David Lee for Amar'e Stoudemire, Landry Fields, Toney Douglas and maybe a second-round draft pick.

The Warriors get a dominant scorer at the power forward to work with Stephen Curry and get a fresh set of back court guys to help out. The implied feud over who runs Golden State (Curry/Ellis) would be over.

The Knicks get their two-guard and a welcome home to Lee.

Google paying to have Android installed on TVs

Neowin has learned that Google has struck a deal with multiple vendors to include Android as part of their TVs. We have already started to see this transition as Lenovo will be including Android 4.0,?with a new line of televisions that it will be launching in the coming year.

What we did not know -- until now -- is that Google is actually paying vendors to include Android. While vendors could have chosen to include Android on their own, with Google chipping in a few extra dollars for them to do so, it means that we're very likely see tons of Android television sets to be introduced in the next few days (and weeks).

While the exact pricing of what Google will pay vendors to include Android on their television sets is unknown, the additional payments will go a long way for vendors who have been seeing diminishing margins over the past few years.

An interesting side note is that if you remember when Google TV was first launched, Intel was a key partner of the project. If you take a look at where Google TV is being deployed, it's apparent that Intel no longer plays a part of Googles plan. Why this transition occured, we do not know.?

Google paying to have Android included in upcoming televisions should not come as a major surprise, but understanding that Google is attempting to motivate vendors by paying them to have its product included may make you think twice about if this is truly the platform of the future.

People with interests of all types are able to share ideas and passions with likeminded individuals throughout the world. Question: What's the Best Way to Celebrate Chinese New Year?

I am a big fan of feng shui and would like to celebrate Chinese New Year the right way. What is the best way to celebrate the Chinese New Year apart from having all the feng shui cures for the year?

Answer: First, congratulations on being a fan of feng shui. When you do your best to apply feng shui in your home, office and garden (or even in your car!); you know you can expect beautiful results in the quality of your everyday life. Feng shui is all about creating strong auspicious energy that attracts the best possible things into your life.

The Chinese New Year, also called the Lunar New Year, is one of the biggest celebrations in Chinese culture. It is a long celebration that lasts for 15 days. Because it depends on the moon cycle - Chinese New Year is on the first New Moon of the year - it comes on a different day each year and is considered to be the beginning of Spring.

Each year, as you probably know, has a specific Chinese zodiac animal, as well as a feng shui element associated with it. This determines the quality of energy in the New Year. For the traditional feng shui practitioners and enthusiasts it is also the time to adjust the annual feng shui cures, you are correct. Find out all about the annual stars, both beneficial feng shui stars, as well as the challenging ones for the current year and adjust the feng shui cures in your home decor several days before the Chinese New Year.

How can you best celebrate the Chinese New Year? It is always helpful to clean your home thoroughly, as well as use some space clearing to assure the feng shui energy in your home is clear and fresh. Be sure to do all the cleaning before the New Year's Day and refrain from cleaning in the first few days of the New Year, as this is considered bad luck.

Traditionally, here are the main elements of the Chinese New Year celebration:

  • HOME DECOR. After thoroughly cleansing the home, Chinese people will decorate it with auspicious red color decor items carrying golden inscriptions with the symbols of Happiness, Longevity, Prosperity, etc. Various flowers, such as Chrysanthemum, Lucky Bamboo, Plum Blossoms and others are used in the Chinese New Year home decor according to the specific meaning of each flower.

You will also see the mystic knot symbol used in numerous decor items, as well as images of many ancient gods venerated in Chinese culture, such as Guan Yu, the God of War and Justice, the Jade Emperor, as well as the very popular Kitchen God.

Basically, it is about creating clean and harmonious energy in your home in order to invite all the blessings of the New Year. Most Chinese people will also wear new clothes for the New Year celebration to symbolize the beginning of fresh energy. Many will also wear clothing in specific colors to win the favors of the ruling animal of the New Year.

How do you know which colors to wear this year? Look up:

    1. The feng shui element of the year, and then
    2. Choose the corresponding color. It's easy!

  • FOOD. The big dinner is sure an important part of this beautiful celebration, and there is a variety of traditional dishes that are prepared specifically for the Chinese New Year. Many of these dishes are served because of their meaning and association with specific energies, as well as on specific days of this long celebration.

For example "fish" in Cantonese sounds like "abundance", so there is always a fish dish at the Chinese New Year celebration. The uncut noodles symbolize long life, while the many sweet dishes are expressions of hope for sweetness in the New Year. You can look up the recipes for some of the most popular Chinese New Year dishes, such as:

The mandarin oranges are a must at the Chinese New Year table because they are a symbol of good luck, also called golden luck.
  • SOCIAL CUSTOMS. The morning after the New Year's day many traditional red envelopes with a bit of money in them are given to children and friends. This symbolises a helping hand from the older generation to the younger one, as well as wishes for prosperity and financial well-being. Small gifts are also exchanged between family members and friends.

You might be familiar with the lion dance, which is often performed during the Chinese New Year in both businesses, as well as some homes. The meaning of the lion dance is to evict and neutralize all negative energy from the previous year. The firecrackers during this celebration have the same purpose of evicting the evil spirits.

Traditionally, the Chinese New Year celebration lasts for 15 days with the festival of Lanterns being the culmination of this big holiday. This is the day when numerous candles are lit on the streets of Chinese communities to symbolize the coming of a fresh new light of the New Year. The beautiful sight of many red paper lanterns with a gentle flickering of fire in them is a welcoming symbol of the hopes and wishes for a beneficial New Year.

As you see, the Chinese New Year is a very beautiful celebration rooted in centuries of traditions with very specific symbolic meaning. You can either use the Chinese symbolism of the elements that most appeal to you, or create your own way of celebrating and welcoming the energy of a New Year.

What matters the most is that you genuinely celebrate a New Year, be it in a traditional Chinese way or not. Being genuine and open always wins the favors of Gods!

Obama applauds Iowa Democrats for their help (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Confronting his Republican opponents, President Barack Obama told Iowa Democrats on Tuesday that the stakes of the 2012 election are much higher than when the state launched his presidential bid four years ago.

"We're battling millions of dollars of negative advertising and lobbyists and special interests who don't want to see the change that you worked so hard to fully take root," Obama said in a teleconference with Democrats attending precinct caucuses. "And that's why this time out is going to be, in some ways, more important than the first time out."

Obama outlined his progress during the first term, telling activists in the live video link that because of their support, the Iraq war ended, a major health care overhaul bill was signed into law and the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays was no longer in use.

"The problems that we've been dealing with over the last three years, they didn't happen overnight and we're not going to fix them overnight," Obama said. "But we've been making steady progress as long as we can sustain it." Democrats estimated that more than 25,000 Iowans attended Democratic caucuses.

Obama wasted little time getting back in front of voters following a Hawaiian vacation spent largely out of the spotlight. On Wednesday, Obama will travel to Cleveland for an event focused on the economy.

Obama was seeking to rebut months of withering criticism from Republicans as GOP voters in Iowa took their first step in choosing a challenger among a field that included Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Ron Paul and others. Republicans have assailed Obama's economic record, pointing to high unemployment rates, while tagging him as a president who has failed to live up to lofty expectations.

"Three years later, the president's promises of hope and change have been replaced with a record of failed leadership and policies that have made the economy worse," Republican National Committee spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski said.

Iowa looks to be among about a dozen states that could shift either way in the 2012 campaign, with Republicans pointing to voter registration gains as a positive sign heading into the fall. Iowa has switched its support in each of the past three elections, supporting Obama in 2008, Republican President George W. Bush in 2004 and Democrat Al Gore in 2000.

Trying to build on his 2008 win there, Obama's campaign has opened eight offices in the state and had held more than 1,200 training sessions, phone banks and other events and made more than 350,000 phone calls to supporters since April.

The president's re-election campaign emailed supporters a video of Obama's Iowa victory speech in January 2008, arguing he has kept the promises he made that night: making health care more affordable, cutting taxes for the middle class, ending the war in Iraq and reducing the nation's dependence on foreign oil.

In Des Moines, roughly 200 people gathered at a caucus site at Lincoln High School, making small talk and waiting for Obama to speak as a girls' basketball game was played in an adjoining gym. Several party loyalists said they thought Obama could reignite the loyal support he generated in 2008.

"No Republican candidate is exciting their base. There's just isn't anybody exciting their base, and if they can't get excited, I just can't believe they have a chance whatsoever," said Danny Waterman, 65, a retired police officer who supported Obama four years ago.

Scott Rieker, a 35-year-old elementary school teacher, said he hasn't agreed with everything Obama has done since winning the White House but many party loyalists are approaching the upcoming campaign with a greater sense of reality.

"I'm not going to vote for anyone else, and I will make calls and knock on doors," Rieker said. "But ... it's more grounded in reality now. We thought that the world would magically change in four years, I think, when we were working last time."

Rieker and others listened as Obama sat in a chair with a flag behind him in a call monitored by Mitch Stewart, the Obama campaign's battleground states director.

Skipping a fiery speech, Obama gave caucus-goers in Iowa an understated recitation of accomplishments and challenges. The address was marred by audio difficulties when the president sought to hear questions from two members of the audience.

Obama told party activists that he was "actually more optimistic now than I was when I first ran, because we've already seen change take place." He said a key part of the 2012 campaign would be "reminding the American people of how far we've traveled and the concrete effects that some of our work has had."

Turning nostalgic at one point, Obama recalled the pivotal role that voters in Iowa played in his first campaign, when he shook up the Democratic political establishment by defeating Hillary Rodham Clinton in the caucuses.

"Because of you, because of all the memories I have of being in your living rooms, meeting you in a diner or seeing you over in a campaign office, I have never lost that same source of inspiration that drove me to embark on this journey in the first place," he said. "You guys inspire me every single day."

The Internet Is People

peopleThere's always been a tension on the Internet between humans and algorithms. In the early days, Yahoo was a human-curated index, remember? But humans couldn't keep up, and the algorithms took over. Today, the human factor is rising in importance once again with Facebook, Twitter, and countless mobile applications like Instagram. Everything is social. The tension today is between social and search?humans versus computers. Except that it isn't so simple. The Internet is not just billions of linked pages, databases, and (increasingly) mobile apps. The Internet is people. It's you and me.
