A pet project: Dogs help troops ease into therapy

VILSECK, Germany ? In a hallway where the thud of Army boots is the common sound, the padded paws of a small black dog were barely audible.

Cash, a 3-year-old Maltipoo with a red bandana around his neck, was on the job at the Warrior Transition Unit, trotting from door to door and poking his nose into each room. Cash?s role at the WTU is simple, setting people at ease in a building where tensions occasionally run high.

Certified by a new Red Cross program, he?s one of three dogs placed in outpatient settings in the Kaiserslautern and Grafenw?hr communities last year in an effort to soothe the discomfort that surrounds medical and counseling appointments.

Advocates increasingly see a role for dogs beyond hospitals and combat zones and within the garrisons that more soldiers will likely call home in the coming years.

?This is to help soldiers, kids, whoever, with the stress of deployment while their parents are away, with recovery from deployment,? said Mark Hooper, director of Grafenw?hr?s Red Cross, which placed Cash and another dog on post last year and hopes to place more in the future.

The benefits have been visible in Europe since 2000, when the Landstuhl Red Cross began asking volunteers to bring their pets to visit patients at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. Raffaella Burris, a volunteer with the program since 2003 and its current chairwoman, said servicemembers opened up when they saw their four-legged visitors.

?They would recall their own pets,? she said. ?You would break the ice talking about their pets. The majority have dogs or cats. You start a very relaxing conversation .?.?. and they just open up and talk.?

Animals provide a window to reach soldiers who find therapy foreign and pets comforting, said Dr. Carol Haertlein Sells, an occupational therapist with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a former researcher at Brooke Army Medical Center.

?You have 45 minutes with a patient, and you may spend the first 20 minutes getting them comfortable, establishing that rapport,? Sells said. ?The dog helps facilitate that, opening up communication.?

The Army recognized the potential in late 2007, when it began deploying occupational therapists with dogs as part of Combat Stress Control teams, roving groups of mental health experts sent to combat areas. Capt. Cecilia Najera was one of the first handlers, deploying to Iraq in 2008 to work with a Labrador retriever.

?It made us a little more approachable,? said Najera, who now works at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. ?People were more likely to talk to us than turn away from us. When you say you?re from mental health, no one wants to talk to you. The dog actually started conversations.?

In Vilseck, part of the Grafenw?hr community, WTU social worker Wendy DeVault had a similar thought when she approached Hooper last summer and asked to bring a certified dog into her office, where she often counsels soldiers. Hooper thought it was a good idea, and, lacking a certification program, turned to Landstuhl as a model.

Today, the dogs certified in Grafenw?hr must meet a checklist of requirements, including registration on post and current vaccinations. They must also pass an American Kennel Club test that measures temperament and training. Each dog?s owner is its handler, and each is responsible for the costs and time that come with caring for the dog.

By September, Hooper?s program had certified two dogs, both placed in Rose Barracks. Cash now comes to work daily with DeVault. Lucy, a 6-year-old golden retriever owned by retired teacher Richard Wiebe, greets morning visitors in the Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic waiting room.

Cash quickly became popular in the unit, DeVault said. At a forum the garrison held for WTU soldiers last year, one soldier held and stroked the dog as he listened to speakers.

?It?s kind of amazing,? DeVault remarked. ?You can see someone who?s angry and maybe had a bad day and then this little black dog jumps up in his lap, and it kind of changes the atmosphere.?

Wiebe and Lucy were originally asked to visit the TBI clinic twice a week, he said; they now visit daily. Officials at the clinic declined to speak about Lucy?s role for this article and did not allow a reporter to speak with patients. Wiebe said his experience has been a positive one.

?A couple of the soldiers will come over and they?ll sit right down on the floor with her like a kid,? he said. ?I talked with a couple of them and they told me it calms them down.?

Randy Click, a coordinator with the Grafenw?hr program, said he?s optimistic about getting the dogs into other buildings on post, including the local Behavioral Health clinic, where doctors counsel soldiers, family members and children. Brian Olden, chief of behavioral health for Bavaria Medical Department Activity, said he?d like the agency to consider the concept.

Research on the use of animals with servicemembers remains slim, said Sells, and the Army is looking for data to justify programs. Najera, too, said the deployment of dogs with occupational therapists, though ongoing, remains a pilot program. The dogs are owned by the Army, she noted, meaning the service pays for care, training and deployment.

It?s a different story in Kaiserslautern, where social worker Azra Surhio pays the bills and handles training for her puppy, Elsie, an 8-month old black-and-brown Swiss Appenzeller she recently brought into her office with the approval of the local WTU commander.

Surhio said having a dog for her practice was a longtime goal, and one she researched thoroughly. Certification through the Landstuhl Red Cross is a goal for later this year, once Elsie is better trained, she said. The dog has adapted quickly to her new role, says Surhio, who believes Elsie can sense emotions.

?She walks up to the soldiers and she can tell if they?re interested in her or not,? she said. ?If they are, she?s right there to be petted and be all friendly. And if she can tell that the soldier isn?t interested in her, she just goes away and she just lays down.?

On a recent weekday, three soldiers in Surhio?s unit stopped by to see her and Elsie. Each lingered to play with the dog.

Spc. Devin Stout gave her a good scratch. Spc. Ashley Adkins allowed herself to be licked in the face. Maj. Mark Johnson played Elsie a song on his guitar.

?When I?m in there talking to Azra, it feels more like a home setting,? Stout said. ?I can feel more relaxed. There?s an animal there, and she just makes me feel more at home.?

Online Business | A Beginners Guide to Successful Email Marketing ...

Hi there, anyone in internet marketing knows that "building your list" is a vital ingredient to your long-term online success- that's a given, but in this article I want to lead those of you who have already developed a list (even if it's a bit early days & small in number) into how to and most importantly not to communicate with your list, the RIGHT and the WRONG way, so here goes ?

Be Subtle In Your Email Marketing

Now we are all aware of email marketing, how it works and the real benefits of it for the Internet marketer and why you simply must be using it as one of your most important Internet marketing strategies and techniques. But beware and take into consideration your own experiences good and bad to make sure your own email marketing is structured correctly to get maximum effect and certainly not to alienate prospective customers.

The Wrong Way

Most of us will have submitted our email while visiting a website, and it's not long before you start hearing from the site with email updates, offers and sales pitches, sometimes you even receive emails and have absolutely no clue how they got to you and your email address.

As Internet users we are all faced with tons of emails telling us to buy this or that product. And if you're like most surfers out there you either ignore such mails, have them blocked by your spam filter or simply delete them un -opened. This is because emails that come, as blatant advertisements are annoying are seen for exactly what they are and hence the open rate is absolutely terrible, come on we've all been there, it drives me round the bend the amount we get.

It's not all wrong but ?..Wasteful

Now don't get me wrong there are many highly successful Internet marketers who have huge lists who just constantly apply the funnel system. Huge mailing to huge lists resulting in large numbers of unsubscribes but also many sales as well it has to be said. But it's very wasteful. There is the need to constantly be replenishing their databases - this is not only time consuming but expensive as well

The Right Way

Now for most of us who are just starting out with limited time, funds etc it's really not possible to make use of the funnel effect and nor should you in my opinion. Look at it this way if you're developing a business you're going to be in it for the long term and therefore by definition you want customers who'll be come repeat customers especially if you've developed a presence in a small, tight niche

So to my mind the right way is to develop a good quality list of very loyal and extremely targeted individuals who'll trust your judgment and therefore keep coming back for more - I hope that makes sense.

Justin Bieber, Far East Movement Drop Fist-Pumping 'Live My Life'

The RedOne-produced party anthem is the lead single off FEM's Dirty Bass.

Justin Bieber's track with Far East Movement dropped Friday (February 24), a few days earlier than expected. "Live My Life," which officially hits iTunes on Tuesday, is the lead single off FEM's new album, Dirty Bass. It feels like Bieber is taking a page from the Usher playbook by hooking up with the dance party-minded production team. The club thumper pays homage to tracks that Usher has made with David Guetta and will.i.am, for instance.

The feel-good song is grinding and a little dirty. For Bieber's part, he sings the hook, proclaiming, "I'm gonna live my life/ No matter what/ We party tonight/ I'm gonna live, live, live my life/ I know that we gonna be all right." He then throws in the good-old dance floor chant "woo woo woo" for good measure.

"We're thrilled to have Justin be a part of Dirty Bass," rapper Kev Nish told RollingStone.com about the club-busting collaboration. "Far East Movement has always focused on unexpected collaborations and mashing up musical genres, which keeps making music exciting. 'Live My Life' is a song we think both Far East Movement and Bieber fans will enjoy together."

The team also worked with LMFAO's RedFoo on a remix of the swirling party track. And, in case you're wondering how the guys in FEM know Bieber, well, apparently Snoop Dogg introduced them at an awards show last year.

The track's producer, RedOne, described the song as "a smash," before he spoke a bit more about the song and hitting the studio with the boys. He added, "And Justin sang the chorus. It's a really good song, and I think people are gonna dance like crazy to it."

What do you think of "Live My Life"? Leave your comment below!

Lab-grown hamburger due to be served this fall

Dutch scientist Mark Post displays samples of lab-grown meat at the University of Maastricht.

By Alan Boyle

The quest to grow meat in a lab rather than on an animal is due to reach its climax this fall, with the first-ever culture-dish hamburger served to a celebrity taster after a $330,000 development effort.

Mark Post, a physiologist at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands, said the project is being funded by an anonymous investor who is interested in "life-transforming technologies" and believes lab-grown meat could revolutionize the food industry.

"It's a reputable source of money, I can tell you," Post said today in Vancouver, Canada, at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Post hopes the tasting will be a media event, with experimental chef Heston Blumenthal cooking the burger. The patty will be much like a regular quarter-pounder?? but with one big difference: This one will be created by growing bovine stem cells in a vat, transforming them into thousands of thin layers of beef muscle cells, mincing them into tiny pieces, then combining the bits with lab-grown animal fat to form a lump of meat the size of a golf ball.

If Post and his colleagues succeed, it would mark a technological triumph after years of working to improve upon the current, millennia-old method for making meat. Researchers in the field say the livestock industry in its current incarnation is too energy-intensive and land-intensive for a global population that's rising in numbers and affluence.

Meat production already takes up more than half of the world's estimated agricultural capacity, in one way or another. U.N. figures show that animal farming takes up 30 percent of the planet's exposed land mass. And over the next 40 years, the demand for meat products is expected to double.

If the researchers' assumptions are correct, growing meat in the lab "could reduce the energy expenditure by about 40 percent," Post said. Lab-grown meat has also won the endorsement of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, because the stem cells could be extracted without killing animals.

The money behind the meat
Post has been talking about serving up the first lab-grown burger for a long time, but it took the anonymous 250,000-euro ($330,000) contribution to turn the dream into reality. Traditional meat producers weren't interested in changing their ways, and were doubtful about success, he said. "Most people don't believe it's ever going to happen," he told reporters.

When Post started working on the project, he focused on growing stem cells from pigs to create a lab-grown sausage, but he said "my financier was not very interested in sausages."

There's still a long way to go between now and the celebrity cookout: Post said he doesn't yet know what the burger would taste like, because the samples that have been grown so far are too small. The pinkish-yellowish strips of muscle cells are only about an inch (3 centimeters) long, a half-inch (1.5 centimeter) wide, and so thin (1 millimeter) that they're semi-transparent. Post feels confident that his team can perfect the process by October, but full commercialization could take another 10 years or more.

The good news is that if there's someone out there willing to buy the second lab-grown hamburger, they can get it for "an extreme reduction in price," Post told me. He estimates that piece of meat should cost just 200,000 euros ($263,000).

Beyond meat
It's worth asking whether the quest to grow lab-grown meat is worth the effort, considering that there are already vegetarian alternatives to meat. Aren't tofurky and field roast good enough? Post and others note that such products haven't made a significant dent in the meat market, and are generally more expensive than the meat items they're meant to replace.

"If there is a vegetable-derived product that can take away the human being's craving for meat, that would be preferable," Post said.

Stanford University biochemist Patrick Brown says he's working on precisely that kind of stuff, and it could be on the market in the next year or so.

"We have a class of products that just totally rocks and cannot be distinguished from the animal-based product it replaces, even by hardcore foodies," he said. He promised that his plant-based alternatives to meat and dairy products would be tasty, nutritious ? and profitable.

"I think it's going to be one of the easier things I've done," he said.

Brown joked that he couldn't talk about the details, "because if I did, I'd have to kill you." He'd say only that he "had no trouble getting investment" from a Silicon Valley venture-capital firm. To commercialize the concept, two ventures have been set up with placeholder names: Sand Hill Foods and Jasper Ridge Creamery.

The way Brown sees it, the meat industry is a "sitting duck for disruptive technology," offering a rich target for alternatives. He said the wholesale market for unprocessed meat has been estimated at $150 billion a year, which is 250 times the current market for meat alternatives.

Even though Post said the meat industry has been generally standoffish about lab alternatives, some companies are going against the grain: Nicholas Genovese, a visiting scholar at the University of Missouri at Columbia, told journalists that JBS, one of the world's biggest meat-packing companies, was interested in his parallel effort to grow meat in the lab.

Mitt attacks Obama on contraception (Politico)

CENTENNIAL, Colo. ? Mitt Romney is charging the Obama administration with seeking to curtail religious freedom at the same time it?s defending its decision to require religious employers to cover birth control in employee health plans.

?I?m just distressed as I watch our president try and infringe upon our rights; the First Amendment of the Constitution provides the right to worship in the way of our own choice,? Romney said to about 2,800 people Monday evening at a high-school gymnasium here.

?Did you understand that this administration argued before the Supreme Court that a church should not be able to determine who their ministers are but that government should decide who qualifies??

He continued: ?And by the way, you know that some of the members of the court are pretty liberal. You know what they decided? They decided 9-0 President Obama was wrong.?

Romney?s remarks, which deviated from his standard stump speech, come one day before the Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri contests in which Rick Santorum, a devout Catholic who is popular with prominent social conservatives, is faring well in the latter two states.

Romney was referring to a January high court ruling, which was limited to employment questions, that found that the Constitution allows for ?special solicitude to the rights of religious organizations.? The ruling has been interpreted as a boost to Catholic groups challenging the contraception mandate in the 2010 Affordable Care Act.

?This just might be the same administration that said that the churches and the institutions they run such as schools and ? adoptions agencies, hospitals, that they have to provide for their employees free of charge contraceptives, morning after pills, in other words abortive pills, and the like, at no cost,? Romney added.

?Think what that does to people who are in faiths that do not share those views. This is a violation of conscience. We must have a president who is willing to protect America?s first right, our right to worship God.?

Romney?s pointed remarks come as the administration is engaging in an increasingly public battle to defend its new ruling requiring Catholic hospitals and schools to provide birth control under the president?s health care law. On Monday, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius published an op-ed in USA Today on Monday in which she defended the administration?s policy. Some Catholic groups have fiercely denounced the policy.

Romney and Santorum sparred on issues such as health care on Monday, with Santorum arguing that the former Massachusetts governor is running scared.

Publicly, Romney hasn?t mentioned or alluded to any of his GOP opponents since Jan. 30, the day before his Florida victory, and the attention paid Monday to Santorum and his signature issue signals a concern.

Romney?s aides privately laugh off the idea of Santorum as a credible challenger. While they, and Romney, say for public consumption that he is a serious candidate, they are quick to point to Santorum?s history backing fellow Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter, long a pro-choice Republican who became a Democrat in his final Senate term.

Raising the religious liberty issue when it comes to Obama?s health care plan is tricky territory for Romney. The health care legislation he enacted as Massachusetts governor left in place a state-level mandate similar to Obama?s federal one.

Last week, the executive director of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts told The Boston Globe that Romney?s criticism of Obama on religious liberties is hypocritical because as governor, he did not lift the state-level requirement for the same thing.

?The initial injury to Catholic religious freedom came not from the Obama administration, but from the Romney administration,? C.J. Doyle, the group?s leader, told the Globe. ?President Obama?s plan certainly constitutes an assault on the constitutional rights of Catholics, but I?m not sure Gov. Romney is in a position to assert that, given his own very mixed record on this.?

Survey: An American Citizen's View Of The Health Of Its People

Article Directory :: Health & Fitness Articles

American citizens have aired their view on the health of our nation through a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation survey which was conducted recently.

Many Americans had a pretty interesting take on the health of the country. In this article, I will just share the results as reported and not the whole survey. The poll was run by a professor, Robert Blendon, at the Harvard School of Public Health.

According to the survey, 45 percent of the American public strongly feels that U.S' state of health has actually grown worse in the past 5 years. However, 40 percent simply thought that it is still the same, and just 13 percent believed that the American health has improved.

This is what the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta show:

From the year 2000 to 2007 the life expectancy at birth rose from 76.8 to 77.9 and at age 65 years it rose from 17.6 - 18.6 years.

Deaths arising from every cause, all ages dropped from 869 per 100,000 - 760.2

Deaths caused by heart disease dropped from 257.6 to 190.9,

Deaths caused by different forms of cancer dropped from 199.6 to 178.4.

The above simply shows a serious improvement in the health of the nation.

Yes, there were declines and mixed-messages. While the percentage of the American population who are in fair or poor health grew from 8.9 percent - 9.9 percent over the age 65, it reduced from 26.9 - 24.0.

Cancer actually increased ( it grew from 4.9 - 6.1 percent of the population), this also goes for heart disease (from 10.9 - 11.8 percent)

In adults >20 diabetes has increased from 8.5 - 11.9 percent, the number of people suffering from hypertension also increased from 28.9 percent - 32.6 percent and the obese population increased from 29.9 percent - 33.7 percent; these are all troubling factors.

Thankfully, high serum cholesterol in adults has dropped considerably from 17.7 percent to 14.6 percent, and the number of smokers has dropped from 23.2 percent - 20.6 percent, and adults who take part in aerobic/strengthening activities has risen from 15.1 percent - 18.8 percent.

There is one point of the survey that most people in the country will agree with and this point of the survey states that "60 percent of the public believed that if the country spent more on efforts to improve health and avoid disease, it would save money in the long run."

It also makes great sense for citizens to do the necessary things that will keep them in great health. Thankfully, more and more people are happy to eat healthy and invest a great deal of money on exercise equipment and tools to live a healthier active life.

Publishers destroying "Scary Stories to Tell In The Dark ...

This is pretty stupid. Stephen Gammell is a great artist and a Caldecott winner.
This is one of my favorites from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark:

Brett Helquist is a good artist and his stuff in the A Series of Unfortunate Events books is really good but there's no need to change the original art here.

4 UK men admit London Stock Exchange bomb plot (AP)

LONDON ? Four British men fueled by the words of a U.S.-born Muslim cleric pleaded guilty on Wednesday to involvement in an al-Qaida inspired plot to spread terror and cause economic damage by bombing the London Stock Exchange at Christmastime.

The men were among nine defendants facing trial in London over an alleged plot to attack the exchange and several other high-profile targets in December 2010. All had initially pleaded not guilty to all the charges against them.

But on Wednesday four of the defendants pleaded guilty at Woolwich Crown Court to involvement in the Stock Exchange plan, and the five other British Muslims to lesser charges.

Mohammed Chowdhury, 21; Shah Rahman, 28; Gurukanth Desai, 30; and Abdul Miah, 25, all admitted preparing for acts of terrorism by planning to plant an improvised explosive device in the toilets of the London Stock Exchange.

Prosecution lawyer Andrew Edis accepted that the men had not planned to kill anyone.

"Their intention was to cause terror and economic harm and disruption," he said. "But their chosen method meant there was a risk people would be maimed or killed."

Chowdhury, from London, was described by prosecutors as the "lynchpin" of the plot. His lawyer, Christopher Blaxland, said Chowdhury admitted planning to plant the bomb, "with the obvious attendant risk but without any intention to cause death or even injury but with the intention to terrorize, damage property and to cause economic damage."

The other five defendants admitted attending planning meetings, fundraising for terrorism or possessing copies of the al-Qaida magazine, Inspire.

Prosecutors said they had not made any bombs or set dates for the attacks.

They said the men were not members of al-Qaida but had been inspired by the terror network and the sermons of its Yemen-based American-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed last year in a U.S. drone strike.

Edis said the nine defendants "were implementing the published strategy of AQAP" ? al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

The suspects, then aged between 20 and 30, were arrested in London, Cardiff and Stoke-on-Trent in central England, in what police called the biggest anti-terror raid for two years.

Prosecutors said they plotted to send mail bombs to various targets in the run-up to Christmas 2010 and had discussed launching a "Mumbai-style" atrocity ? referring to the bomb blasts that killed 166 people in India's financial center in 2008.

The nine defendants were accused of agreeing on targets, discussing materials and methods, and researching files "containing practical instruction for a terrorist attack."

The men held planning meetings, researched bomb-making and scouted out locations including Parliament, Westminster Abbey and the London Eye Ferris wheel ? not knowing that they were under police surveillance and their homes and cars had been bugged.

A handwritten target list found at one of the defendant's homes listed the names and addresses of London Mayor Boris Johnson, two rabbis, the American Embassy and the Stock Exchange.

The defendants will be sentenced next week, but the judge has already told Chowdhury he will receive 18 1/2 years and Rahman 17 years. They are likely to serve half that time before being eligible for parole.

When police swooped on the suspects in three cities in the early morning of Dec. 20, 2010, they said it was the most significant anti-terror raid for two years.

London has been targeted several times by violent Islamists affiliated with or inspired by al-Qaida.

In July 2005, four suicide bombers killed 52 commuters on three London subway trains and a bus. A year later, U.S. and British intelligence officials thwarted one of the largest plots yet ? a plan to explode bombs on nearly a dozen trans-Atlantic airliners.

Angelic "Steve Jobs" loves Android in Taiwan TV ad (Reuters)

TAIPEI (Reuters) ? He may have derided Android devices in real life but in the afterlife Apple Inc founder Steve Jobs is glad he can use one -- or at least that's the story a Jobs look-alike tells in a recent TV commercial for a Taiwanese electronics company's new product.

In the ad, Taiwanese comedian and impersonator Ah-Ken, dressed in Jobs' trademark black turtle neck sweater and blue jeans and sporting white angel's wings and a halo, extols the virtues of Action Electronics Co.'s combined tablet PC and multi-language dictionary, which runs on Google Inc's Android.

"Introducing the new generation of the pad," says the "Jobs" character, whipping the Action Pad out of his back jeans pocket, wings flapping as he shows off the dictionary functions on a giant screen behind a darkened stage furnished with a sofa and small table.

"Thank God I finally get to play other tablets," the character adds in the 20-second commercial's final scene, a broad grin on his face as he taps away on the device on the sofa. The ad is subtitled in English throughout, a nod to the device's dictionary function.

Jobs, who died in October 2011, famously referred to Android as "shit," according to his biography, and was quoted in the book as saying he was going to "destroy" Android and was prepared to go to "thermonuclear war" over the product.

"Steve Jobs always promoted things that were good for people, Apple products, so his image can also promote other things that are good," said Chelsea Chen, a spokeswoman for Action Electronics, a maker of electronic gadgets including portable DVD players and Internet devices.

The commercial does not use Jobs' name or refer to him or Apple in any way, but has drawn some sharp reactions on YouTube,

with some branding it distasteful and disgusting and one even calling for a boycott of the company. The video is at: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeXXwQrQiPE&feature=youtu.be)

Chen didn't see any adverse reaction from Apple.

"It's just an impersonator, not Jobs," she said.

"We have no choice but to use Android, we can't use iOS," she added, referring to Apple's mobile device operating system.

It's not the first time Jobs' image has been used in Taiwan to promote products, a measure of his fame in the wired, tech-exporting island whose companies make most of Apple's products. Last year a drinks company had a Jobs look-alike promoting a green tea drink.

Jobs has also been featured by Taiwanese satirical news video maker Next Media Animation, which once portrayed him knocking the helmet off "Darth Vader" Bill Gates of Microsoft with a light saber and then wearing it himself and ruling the tech universe from an office in a Death Star.

(This version corrects year of Jobs' death in fifth paragraph)

Obama works to save jobs, 1 at a time (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama is trying to rebuild the American economy, one job at a time ? literally.

The president asked an online town hall questioner Monday to send him her husband's resume, insisting he wanted to look into why the man remained out of work despite his background as a semiconductor engineer.

"I meant what I said, if you send me your husband's resume, I'd be interested in finding out exactly what's happening right there," Obama told the questioner, Jennifer Wedel of Fort Worth, Texas.

He told Wedel that according to what he was hearing from industry, such high-tech fields are in great demand and her husband "should be able to find something right away."

Wedel told Obama that despite what he said, her husband had been out of work for three years. She wanted to know why foreign workers were getting visas for high-skilled work.

The exchange came as Obama appeared in a live video chat room known as a "Hangout," part of online search giant Google's social networking site Google Plus. He was answering questions submitted via the Google Inc.-owned video site YouTube, as well as interacting live with Wedel and four others in the Hangout.

The post-State of the Union session was part of the White House focus on social media. In past such events ? with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and earlier YouTube sessions following previous State of the Union addresses ? Obama answered questions that had been submitted via online networks. But Monday's event allowed him to interact with a selection of his questioners, leading to more substantive exchanges as they pushed him on his stances.

Wedel's insistence that the president's claims about the demand for high-skilled workers weren't being born out for her husband led to the president's offer to take a look at his resume.

"I'll have to take you up on that," she told him. And Obama came back to it after covering a range of issues in the 45-minute session, telling Wedel, "Remember to send me that information!"

Obama got a variety of questions on the economy, and defended his policies on small businesses and innovation. An Occupy protester sent in a video saying she was out of work and asking Obama: "I need help. I'm 53. What am I going to do?"

The president's response, in part: "The most important thing I can do for folks who are out of work right now is grow the economy."

Obama was also asked to justify his administration's use of unmanned drone strikes, and contended they were being used judiciously. "I think that there's a perception somehow that we're just sending in a whole bunch of strikes willy-nilly," Obama said. "This is a targeted, focused effort at people who are on a list of active terrorists who are trying to go in and harm Americans."

And he was asked about online piracy. Congress recently delayed action on legislation cracking down on online piracy after opposition from Internet companies including Google.

Obama said he thought it was possible to protect intellectual property that creates jobs in the U.S., while still respecting the integrity of the Internet as an open system.

The exchanges came a day ahead of the Republican primary in Florida, as GOP presidential hopefuls attack Obama daily. But none of the questions put to him were about the presidential race. They were about the State of the Union and people's lives now.

There were also light moments, as Wedel asked Obama if he would show off his dance moves (the president refused, saying the first lady mocks his dancing) and another questioner asked the president how he and Michelle Obama planned to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary this fall (since it's shortly before the election, Obama said he wasn't sure how romantic it would be).

More than 133,000 questions were submitted and voted on by YouTube users. Google officials selected the questions to ask based in part on those results.

Although many of the questions that appeared online were about Obama's stance on legalizing marijuana ? something he has said he opposes when asked in the past ? that did not come up Monday. Organizers said the No. 1 voted question was about the potential extradition to the U.S. of Richard O'Dwyer, a British student accused of setting up a website that gave people access to films and TV shows for free in violation of copyright laws.

Obama said he wasn't personally involved in the case but the administration wanted to ensure that intellectual property is protected "in a way that's consistent with Internet freedom."
