Tips To Care For Your Pet Dog In Spring - Oneindia Boldsky

The transition between the winter and spring requires a lot of attention to your pet dog. The spring season is one such tropical season where trees shed their leaves for the new ones. Likewise, even humans and animals will experience certain changes in their skin or hair. Animals which are domesticated needs to be given extra care during the spring season as? the weather is not entirely cold or hot.

It is also important to note that during the changing season, many pets will fall sick due to various reasons. Diseases related to skin can be high due to the shedding of its hair and moisture due to excessive sweating.? Hence taking care of your pet dog is very essential. Taking the dog to the veteran should be mandatory, especially when your dog is pregnant or has the tendency of falling sick often. Otherwise, some simple home care tips for the pets can be done to ensure good health and safety of the dog.

Tips to take care of your pet dog this spring:

Skin care

Skin care literally means that during this season, dogs tend to shed their hair. Though it is normal, care should be given as this season is an amalgamation of cold and warm weather. Hence, when it comes to skin care, dogs might get skin allergies due to excessive sweating or suffer from dryness. So make sure, you regularly brush your dog as it helps restore oils.

Paw Care

Paw care is essential in every season. Dogs are generally playful and tend to harm their paws in a melee. Even due to dryness in the weather, dogs tend to lose moisture in their nails and the possibility of chipping is high. Make sure that you moisturise the paws of your pet dog. Likewise, wash your dog's feet with soap after every walk.

Exercise

Exercise is very essential for dogs. As they are active animals, daily walking and exercise is a must. This activity keeps your pet dog more active during this season. Increase walks and runs in the park steadily, but gradually. And make sure you bathe them whenever required.

Allergies

With the changing season, we get infected with some allergies. Even dogs for that matter get spring time allergies too. One of the common allergy is the pollen allergy that is caused by the pollen from the first flowering trees. Also because it is a dry season, dust can also lead to an allergy for the dogs.

The spring season is considered to be one of the beautiful seasons. But at the same time, pets should be given extra care as the allergy level is high during this season.

Egypt?s Military Signals Impatience with President

(CAIRO) ? Egypt?s powerful military is showing signs of growing impatience with the country?s Islamist leaders, indirectly criticizing their policies and issuing thinly veiled threats that it might seize power again.

The tension is raising the specter of another military intervention much like the one in 2011, when generals replaced longtime authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak after they sided with anti-regime protesters in their 18-day popular uprising.

The strains come at a time when many Egyptians are despairing of an imminent end to the crippling political impasse between President Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood group on one side, and the mostly secular and liberal opposition on the other.

The tug of war between the two camps is being waged against a grim backdrop of spreading unrest, rising crime and a worsening economy.

?In essence, the military will not allow national stability or its own institutional privileges to come under threat from a breakdown in Egypt?s social fabric or a broad-based civil strife,? said Michael W. Hanna, an Egypt expert from the New York-based Century Foundation.

?This is not an ideological army or one that seeks to destabilize civilian governance. ? But it is also not an army that will sit by while the country reaches the tipping point on the path to civil strife.?

(PHOTOS: Egypt Attempts to Flush Out Gaza?s Smuggling Tunnels)

The latest friction began when a rumor circulated that Morsi planned to replace Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, his defense minister and the army chief, because of his resistance to bringing the military under the sway of the Brotherhood-dominated government.

El-Sissi may have angered Morsi last month when he signaled the military?s readiness to step in, warning that the state would collapse if no solution was found to the political crisis. Pointedly, he also spoke of how the military faces a dilemma in marrying the task of protecting state installations in restive locations with its resolve not to harm peaceful protesters.

In another provocative comment earlier this month, el-Sissi was quoted as saying he would never allow the armed forces to be dominated by the Brotherhood, or any other group, stressing the military?s national identity.

A Brotherhood spokesman, Yasser Mehrez, dismissed claims that the group sought to bring the military under its sway. ?This is old talk that has been repeated over and over again,? he said.

The rumor about el-Sissi?s dismissal was widely suspected to be a trial balloon floated by the Muslim Brotherhood to gauge military and public reaction.

The military did not officially respond. But widely published comments attributed to an anonymous military source threatened that any attempt to remove the military?s top commanders would be ?suicide? for the government and spoke of widespread anger within the armed forces.

The source was quoted as saying the public will not accept any meddling in the military and will close ranks to counter any pressures or challenges.

The military distanced itself from the comments on a statement posted on its official Facebook page. But the situation was deemed serious enough for Morsi?s office to issue a statement late Monday that appeared aimed at calming the military.

It reassured commanders of the administration?s appreciation of the armed forces and said the president had confidence in el-Sissi.

But the statement, which blamed media for spreading ?lies and rumors,? may have done little to ease the tension.

?The two sides may be publicly dismissing reports of tension, but the army is making it very clear to the presidency that any attempt to dismiss el-Sissi would backfire,? said military analyst and retired army Gen. Mohammed Qadri Said.

?They claim mutual love and respect, but what is happening is not indicative of this.?

The military also handed Morsi a public humiliation when army commanders chose not to enforce a night curfew he imposed on three restive Suez Canal cities in riots last month.

In a direct challenge to the president, several top field commanders said they would not use force against civilians in the three cities. Residents openly defied Morsi by staging demonstrations during the curfew hours, playing soccer in the streets and setting off fireworks.

El-Sissi?s top lieutenant, Chief of Staff Sedki Sobhi, delivered another implicit warning to Morsi and the Brotherhood this week.

While the military was not currently involved in politics, he said: ?It keeps an eye on what goes on in the nation and if the Egyptian people ever needed the armed forces, they will be on the streets in less than a second.?

(PHOTOS: Egypt?s Revolution in Retrospect: TIME Goes to Tahrir Square)

Significantly, Sobhi made his comments in the United Arab Emirates, whose government accuses Egypt?s Brotherhood of meddling in its affairs and has arrested 11 Egyptian expatriates there for their membership of the group.

Morsi and the Brotherhood have made it clear that they do not want the military to play any political role.

But that did not stop el-Sissi from extending an invitation to the opposition and Islamist leaders loyal to Morsi to sit down informally over lunch to defuse a crisis over presidential decrees issued in November that gave Morsi near absolute powers. The decrees have since been rescinded.

Under pressure from the Brotherhood, el-Sissi withdrew the invitation just hours before the meeting was to start.

Morsi appointed el-Sissi less than two months after taking office as Egypt?s first freely elected president. The Aug. 12 appointment followed Morsi?s bold decision to retire the nation?s two top generals, restoring the full powers of the president?s office and ending a months-long power struggle between the two sides. Before Morsi?s move, the military had the power to legislate since the legislature was dissolved in June by a court ruling. The military also held veto power over a panel that was drafting a new constitution at the time.

Still, few ever took el-Sissi to be the president?s man. And there were doubts that six decades of de facto military rule had come to an end or that the military had been relegated to playing second fiddle to civilians.

Morsi and his Islamist supporters passed up a major opportunity to curb the military?s power ? something that would have meant a major confrontation with the generals.

The new constitution drafted by Islamists enshrined the military?s near-complete independence and kept its vast economic interests above oversight, against the wishes of many who participated in the 2011 revolt.

With chaos in the country deepening, chants calling for military intervention during street protests, last heard en masse during the uprising, are making a timid comeback.

?Millions of Egyptians want the army to come back and deliver us from chaos,? Ibrahim Issa, host of a political talk show on television, said this week.

?This is the sentiment on the Egyptian street, and ignoring it is stupid,? said the popular Issa, a harsh critic of Morsi, the Brotherhood and the military when it was in power.

Since taking office in June 2012, Morsi has made little progress in tackling Egypt?s pressing problems ? steep price increases, surging crime, deteriorating services and fuel shortages.

The Brotherhood, which dominates parliament and the government after winning every election since Mubarak?s ouster, is accused of monopolizing power. And Morsi has been criticized for failing to deliver on a promise of an inclusive government representing the Christian minority, liberal and secular political factions, and women.

The highly charged political climate and the collapsing economy could make a military takeover seem like a welcome development in some corners of Egypt ? or at least a necessary evil that could salvage the nation.

But the military may not be willing to insert itself directly again in politics or governance. Its prestige was badly tarnished by scathing criticism of its handling of the post-Mubarak transition period.

A few days into the uprising, Mubarak ordered the army into the streets to replace a police force that melted away when confronted with massive public outrage over decades of abuse.

With the country in chaos and paralyzed, the military later sided with protesters who demanded that Mubarak leave office. A council of ruling generals took over the reins of power, but the relationship soon turned sour.

Activists and pro-democracy groups accused the generals of widespread human rights violations during their rule, including the torture of detainees and the trial of at least 10,000 civilians before military tribunals.

The military later made good on its promise to hand over power to an elected government, although Morsi and his Brotherhood would clearly not have been the generals? choice if they had to make one.

With that history in mind, there are serious questions about whether a military intervention can even solve any of Egypt?s problems in a time short enough to satisfy a population seething with anger over the chaos and hardships of the last two years.

The military would be risking more vilification if it does not move the country onto firmer ground quickly.

Nevertheless, there may be enough goodwill toward the military and popular discontent to give it another chance.

Wenger erupts before Arsenal-Bayern showdown

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:33 p.m. ET Feb. 18, 2013

LONDON (AP) -In a season of brilliance from Bayern Munich and considerable anguish for Arsenal, Champions League success has taken on differing levels of importance as they prepare to meet Tuesday in the last 16.

The sight of Arsene Wenger turning angrily on reporters Monday gave an indication of the importance of the two-matches to his Arsenal side.

Europe is Arsenal's last route to ending a trophy drought stretching back to 2005 after second-tier club Blackburn ended its FA Cup hopes on Saturday.

Questions on Monday about that humiliation were met with tetchy responses from Wenger, who then reacted with anger to a report claiming he was in talks about a new contract, just as calls from some fans for the manager's exit gather pace.

"I deserve a bit more credit than wrong information that has only one intention - to harm," Wenger said.

Turning to one reporter, Wenger asked: "Why do you look at me?"

The Frenchman, who has been at Arsenal since 1996, then complained about the persistent questions about this season's struggles and mounting criticism of his management.

"We live in a democracy of experts and opinions ... there are a lot of experts who are not necessarily always right," Wenger said.

What is indisputable is Arsenal's Premier League position: fifth, 21 points behind leader Manchester United and four points behind the fourth spot to qualify for the Champions League for the 16th straight season.

Winning the competition could be Arsenal's only way of remaining among Europe's elite next season - like London rival Chelsea last year when the Blues beat Bayern in the final to qualify for this year's competition.

"Arsenal belong among Europe's best teams," Bayern defender Daniel van Buyten said. "They have huge potential going forward, very strong individuals and a very good team."

But unlike the four-time European champions, Arsenal can't afford to let-up domestically and shift focus to the Champions League.

Bayern has spent the past weeks bolstering its domestic dominance, moving 15 points clear in the Bundesliga while also remaining in contention for the German Cup.

"Our team is more homogenous this season than at any time since I joined Bayern," said Van Buyten, who has been at the club since 2006. "We already had some very good phases, for example a couple of years ago when we nearly got the treble, but now we've improved by a few more percentage points."

No team has scored against Bayern in 2013, while the seven goals conceded and 57 scored in the Bundesliga are unparalleled at this stage in the season.

Winning the Champions League would be the perfect sendoff for coach Jupp Heynckes before Pep Guardiola takes charge in the offseason, especially given the frustration over last season's loss in the final to Chelsea.

Arsenal's players, though, are recalling how Chelsea unexpectedly produced London's first European Cup by eliminating Barcelona and then beating Bayern.

"Chelsea weren't having a good season and they got a bit lucky in some games, but showed great character," Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere said. "We need to do that now and come together as a team ... we have beaten big European teams here before so we need to do that again."

And Heynckes is not underestimating Arsenal despite the weekend setback.

"Arsenal found their rhythm again in the last weeks," he said. "They play very well going forward ... I warn against underestimating this team. They're back up and running again. That makes it very dangerous for us."

Kerry eyes Europe, Mideast for first trip overseas

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Secretary of State John Kerry has a full plate of global crises as he plots his maiden voyage abroad: Egypt in chaos, Syria engulfed in civil war, moribund Mideast peace talks and North Korea threatening to detonate an atomic bomb while Iran moves closer to developing one of its own.

Kerry has to deal with all of these unresolved diplomatic crises even as he looks to put his personal stamp on American diplomacy and prepares for President Barack Obama's upcoming visit to the Middle East.

Diplomats say the 2004 presidential candidate is likely to embark on his first trip as secretary to Europe and the Middle East in the last week of February. He is expected in several European capitals and Israel, the Palestinian territories and possibly Egypt.

Synthetic circuit allows dialing gene expression up or down in human cells

Feb. 11, 2013 ? Scientists who built a synthetic gene circuit that allowed for the precise tuning of a gene's expression in yeast have now refined this new research tool to work in human cells, according to research published online in Nature Communications.

"Using this circuit, you can turn a gene from completely off to completely on and anywhere between those two extremes in each cell at once. It's a nice tool if you want to know what happens at intermediate levels of gene expression. There has been no such system so far, but now it is available for mammalian cell research," said senior author G?bor Bal?zsi, Ph.D., associate professor in The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Department of Systems Biology.

Present options for altering gene expression in human cells are blunt instruments by comparison. Knocking out a gene eliminates its expression completely. Inhibiting it with RNA interference dials it partially down and can affect other genes. Inserting a gene expression vector into cells overexpresses the gene, but it's usually uncontrolled. Commercially available versions can switch a gene on or off, but cannot precisely dial between these extremes.

"For cancer research, the system will allow scientists to test the boundaries of a gene known to confer resistance to a drug in cancer cells by dialing its expression to different levels and treating the cells with the drug," said first author Dmitry Nevozhay, M.D. Ph.D., instructor in Systems Biology.

"Likewise, such a system would allow personalized gene therapy, by precisely tuning the therapeutic gene level expression depending on disease progression and the patient's need," Nevozhay said.

In microbial or yeast biology research scientists have started to understand and manipulate gene function quantitatively, almost like we understand electronic circuits, Bal?zsi said. "This makes research in those areas more amenable to engineering and mathematical characterization, -- but that's not true for human cells, and part of the problem is that tools that tune gene expression have been lacking."

A step-by-step guide for others to build mammalian synthetic gene circuits By refining their circuit to work in a human breast cancer cell line, the team demonstrated that their approach can be used in mammalian cells while offering a step-by-step guide that other researchers could follow to build other synthetic circuits for use with other genes.

"With all of our steps reported, if someone wants to build another type of gene expression switch, or oscillator, they could build the circuit in fast-growing yeast cells, where it can be engineered and optimized quickly and reliably," Bal?zsi said. "Once you know it works in yeast, you know the steps to make it function in human cells. This process is similar to extensive testing of NASA's space operations on Earth before actually carrying them out in space."

Synthetic biologists apply engineering principles to design and build new biological systems for predefined purposes.

In yeast, Bal?zsi and colleagues synthesized a gene circuit designed to control the level of gene expression precisely using the tetracycline repressor.

They made the promoter for the repressor identical to the promoter for the reporter gene yEGFP encoding the green fluorescent protein. This caused a negative feedback loop, creating a linear dependence of the yEGFP level on the tetracycline analog in the growth medium.

Tunable control of gene expression in mammalian cells

The researchers modified the synthetic network, which initially did not work at all in human cells. A computational model suggested a strategy to optimize the network for mammalian cells.

Several modifications improving transcription, translation and intracellular localization of the regulator protein were added to the synthetic network one at a time. Each one bolstered the network's output in human cells, until it finally achieved a linear dose response of gene expression to the tetracycline analog doxycycline.

Among the additions made to the circuit:

* Addition of an intron (non-coding DNA), which when inserted into genes can increase their expression in mammalian cells.

* Codon optimization in the repressor and reporter genes.

* Introduction of a nuclear-localization sequence, to take the circuit into the cell nucleus, where it can influence gene expression.

* Addition of the Kozak sequence, which improves gene expression in mammalian cells by enhancing translation.

* Promoter optimization, which maximizes the gap between full and basal expression.

Finally, they used the same circuit to control expression of an additional red fluorescence protein gene called mCherry as proof of concept for regulating other genes.

His synthetic gene circuit research won Bal?zsi a National Institutes of Health New Innovator Award in 2009, one of only 54 such grants made nationally that year to fund bold ideas with the potential to quickly translate research into improved human health.

"This research is not possible without the New Innovator Award," Bal?zsi said. "It allows you to explore off the beaten path. We aren't looking directly at the next obvious step towards curing cancer or discovering new molecular interactions.

"Yet, we believe steps that don't seem obvious today are crucial for tomorrow's therapies. We've outlined a set of engineering steps that will help us better understand and control gene expression to improve cancer treatment or develop new approaches to gene therapy," he said. "Traditional funding mechanisms would not have done it."

He also received an MD Anderson seed grant to launch his research.

Co-authors with Bal?zsi and Nevozhay is Tomasz Zal, Ph.D., of MD Anderson's Departments of Immunology and of Molecular and Cellular Oncology.

Research was funded by the NIH Director's New Innovator Award (1DP2 OD006481-01), a grant from the National Cancer Institute (R01 CA137059) and an MD Anderson Institutional Research Grant.

How to safely send a digital Valentine

Getty Images/OJO Images

Seriously: Try to choose a one-to-one way of letting your valentine know you care, and avoid doing it on social media.

By Leslie Meredith, TechNewsDaily

With just days until Valentine's Day, the surveys on how lovers connect on the year's most romantic day are pouring in. We culled the best bits to help you find the most effective (and safest) way to send a digital message to your valentine.

More than 75 percent of people said they call, text or email to communicate with significant others, according to a survey of 200 tech users conducted by Sendmail, a company that provides an open source email platform. The lesson here is to choose a one-to-one channel, not?social media .?None of the respondents sent a tweet to their partner, only 1 percent used Instagram or Google+, 5 percent used a video chat service like Skype and 11 percent posted to Facebook.

But the results were different when responses were broken down by age. For those under the age of 24, video chatting was their top choice, while people over the age of 54 found?email most appropriate.

And forget sweet nothings ? many will be sending sexy photos instead. More than a third of Americans plan to send their partner sexy or romantic photos on Valentine's Day via text, email and social media, McAfee, a security firm, said this week in its study, "Love, Relationships and Technology." But your photo may get more exposure than you're anticipating.

Related story: Ex-sweeties threatening to post your naked pics? Odds are, they'll do it, survey suggests

In a new Match.com report, more than half of male daters and 45 percent of women said they've received a "sext" (a sexual text or picture-based text message), and 23 percent have shared their sexy messages and images with three or more people.?Men ?don't seem to mind when women share men's photos with their friends, but if the tables are turned, nearly 90 percent of women said they'd be offended if their guy showed pictures to his friends.

That's why Cosmopolitan magazine recommends using?Snapchat , a free picture-messaging app that self-destructs your photos ? sexy or otherwise ? after a few seconds. The venerable girl-guide also suggests taking a close-up picture that shows only a bit of cleavage or hip, so you can't be easily identified by others.

But once you've sent a photo or posted a message, your privacy is no longer guaranteed ? even Snapchat photos can be captured with another phone camera or by a practiced user who can manage to grab a screenshot in a second or two. And after a break-up, the risks soar that your ex will share intimate photos. Read more:?Technology Fuels Revenge of the Ex .

One last tip: Double check who you're sending your romantic message to before you tap send. About 16 percent of people in the Sendmail survey confessed they've sent sexts to the wrong person.

If you've decided to play it safe and send an old-fashioned message, try Red Stamp, a charming free app for iPhone that lets you make and send your own cards ? digital and paper.

Carley Knobloch from Digitwirl shows off a variety of tech gifts, apps and websites that you can use to keep your love hot for Valentine's Day, such as a chili pad mattress cover, a hotel app with discounted rooms and Smart Candles that help set the mood in your home.

Are Stocks Getting Ready To Correct? | Stock Market Blog ...

Odds Favor Pullback vs. Ongoing Vertical Ascent

A common sense tenet of investing is assessing possible risk relative to the possible reward. As we have noted since January 24, the stock market?s risk/reward ratio has entered unfavorable territory. When markets correct, it is typical to ?retrace or give back? 38.2% of the recent gains. As shown below, if the stock market experienced a typical ?give back?, the S&P 500 could drop 63 points.

Since the November 2012 low, the S&P 500 has gained 166 points ? a big move. From a risk/reward perspective, a fair question is ?are the odds better for the S&P 500 to tack on another 63 points or do the odds favor the market giving back 63 points?? While we are not calling for a 63 point pullback, we believe the answer is the ?63 point give back? is the higher probability outcome.

Cyclical Stocks Losing Momentum

According to the AMEX, the Morgan Stanley (MS) Cyclical Index:

?Is designed to measure the performance of economically sensitive industries within the U.S. economy and detect shifts in investor sentiment. The CYC Index comprises 30 stocks from over 25 industries, including automobiles, metals, papers, machinery, chemicals and transportation.?

When the MS Cyclical Index is outperforming the broader market, it reflects optimism about the economy. When the index begins to lose steam relative to the S&P 500, it is indicative of slowing bullish momentum about future economic outcomes. As we explain in detail at the 6:28 mark of the video below, the MS Cyclical Index has been hinting at a possible reversal relative to the broader market, which in turn is concerning for stock bulls.

Below is an updated version of the MS Cyclical Index?s performance relative to the S&P 500. Recently, reversals within the blue trend channel (see A1 & B1) have been followed by weakness in the S&P 500 (see above A2 & B2). If the pattern holds, the turn down this week below C1 hints at some corrective action in the stock market.

Fear Index Says ?Be Careful?

The VIX is also known as the Fear Index. When the S&P 500 is outperforming the VIX, ?risk-on? tends to be in fashion. Conversely, when the VIX begins to outperform stocks, the odds of entering a ?risk-off? or corrective phase increase. As shown below, the S&P 500 relative to the VIX recently broke above resistance in a manner consistent with ?risk-on?. Since then, the breakout is beginning to look more like a ?fake out?. As of Thursday morning, the VIX has beaten the S&P 500 by roughly 10% this week, which raises a yellow flag for stock bulls.

The Battle of Inflation vs. Deflation

Stock market corrections tend to coincide with increasing concerns about future economic growth. Prolonged periods of economic weakness are deflationary events since waning demand causes asset prices to fall. When investors are more concerned about inflation vs. deflation, the ratio of silver (SLV) to Treasuries (TLT) tends to rise. When investors are more concerned about economic weakness and deflation, the ratio below tends to fall (see chart below).

With the Fed running the printing presses at breakneck speed, fears of inflation have had the upper hand in recent weeks. If the chart above breaks out to the upside, our concerns about a stock market correction would lessen. If the ratio begins to fall into the ?Deflation Fears? area above, our concerns about stock prices would increase.

What Goes Up Can Come Down ? Fast

As we noted January 25, when markets begin to advance in a near-vertical manner, it becomes more and more difficult to manage risk. Charts that ?go straight up? can also ?come straight down?. If the NASDAQ breaks below the blue support lines shown below, a fairly quick drop back toward 3060 could be in the cards. Markets tend to fill ?white space? on charts once bullish momentum deteriorates.

After noting an improving risk/reward profile on November 19, 2012, we began buying back stocks. Last week, as the risk/reward profile was becoming increasingly less favorable we booked profits in small-caps (IWM), transportation (IYT), mid-caps (MDY), emerging markets (EEM), technology (QQQ), and the broad market (SPY). The market can quickly erase gains that have taken months to accrue. By converting the gains to cash, they cannot be taken away by the market. Thus, with profits booked we are in better control relative to our next moves. If the market corrects, we can redeploy our profits at lower levels. If the market begins behaving in a more favorable manner, we can always buy back in when the risk/reward ratio is more favorable.

Could stocks continue to march higher in a straight line? Absolutely, positively yes, but it is not likely. We are not calling a top; just trying to invest prudently and protect our gains.

7 Simple Steps to Improve Your Relationship | Psych Central

7 Simple Steps to Improve Your RelationshipThere are so many books and articles written about how to communicate effectively that it often can be overwhelming knowing what to believe. Below are some of the most important factors couples need to focus on to improve their relationship.

My ideas are based on my observations of working with hundreds of couples over the last 10 years.

1. Seek to understand before trying to be understood.

One of the most common negative patterns I see in my work with couples is the cycle of criticism and defensiveness. This often happens when you hear something you perceive as an attack or criticism from your partner, which leads you immediately to defend yourself.

This pattern sets both of you up not to be heard. As soon as you start to defend your position, you?ve lost the opportunity to understand your partner. Even if you feel under attack or think you hear a criticism, try to understand your partner?s thoughts and feelings before you respond.

2. Slow down your communication to truly hear your partner.

Many issues get out of control because once this dynamic of criticism and defense is under way, the interaction often moves very quickly. When your communication is speeding up, you can miss a lot of important information that your partner is expressing. This fast pace also increases the volatility of your discussion, making it harder for you to keep the conversation calm.

If you notice that your discussion is moving too quickly, intentionally put on the brakes and slow down the exchange. Make sure your partner knows you truly want to understand what he or she is saying. This helps defuse the reactivity and allows you to continue to communicate in an adult-to-adult way.

3. Be curious about your partner?s perspective.

This one is easier said than done when you?re feeling blamed, criticized or attacked. However, one of the best things you can do in such circumstances is to be curious about your partner?s perspective. This can be disarming in a positive way, and it immediately helps de-escalate the rising tension between you.

By being curious, you can learn new things about your partner, as well as support your conversation in moving toward a resolution. You can still disagree with your partner?s perspective and remain curious and interested in how their view is different from yours. Practice this next time you feel a heated discussion coming on and see what happens.

4. Recognize your emotional triggers and learn to self-soothe.

When you know what your emotional triggers are, it allows you to be aware when the potential for their activation is present. We all bring ?baggage? into our relationships ? from our childhood, previous relationships, school experiences and of course, our family of origin. There?s no such thing as a person who is ?baggage-free;? however, you can use your awareness of your hot spots to know when they are likely to be triggered.

Practice observing yourself, even when you feel triggered by your partner. See if you can name it by saying ?I?m feeling [insert feeling] now, and I think it?s also touching something in my past that?s not related to you.? By naming the trigger, it helps your partner understand that there?s more at play here than just the current conversation. This understanding can help both of you be less reactive in the moment.

5. Practice using empathy to foster a closer connection.

Empathy is the fuel of good relationships. Being empathic is about imagining yourself walking in your partner?s shoes seeing the world from their perspective. When you can respond empathically to your partner, it facilitates a deeper bond and creates a strong sense of safety and trust between you. When you?re feeling attacked, however, this is the last thing you feel like doing. It does require you to be able to step outside yourself and begin to appreciate a reality different from yours.

Practicing empathy does not mean that you have to completely surrender and give up what you want or give up your own reality. It just means you need to suspend your own perspective, even momentarily, so you can appreciate the smallest part of how your partner sees things. Start small ? even if you?re imagining only one to five percent of what your partner feels ? and then build on that. Your partner will feel the shift and will be able to let down his or her guard a little, opening up the possibility of a better connection.

6. Listen for the hidden unmet need or emotion.

When your partner is in distress and voicing a complaint or you?re feeling criticized or blamed, there?s always some unmet need, want, desire or unexpressed emotion underlying this cry. The challenge for you is to go underneath the overt complaint and see if you can tap into the hidden emotion. By uncovering this emotion and tentatively asking if the covert emotion is also going on for your partner, you can bypass the surface anger, irritation or resentment and cut to the core emotion that needs to be validated.

This is no easy task, as it requires you to figuratively step up and out of the current conflict and to look and listen for what?s not being expressed. It also requires you to suspend your own reactivity and defensiveness in order to connect with your partner?s deeper needs. When you find yourself in a conflict situation, pause for a moment and see if you can feel what else in the conversation your partner is not expressing. To help you with this, remind yourself that your partner is in distress, but is not able to share the whole picture of the distress with you. Listen carefully for this and use your curiosity to find out what else is not being overtly shared.

7. Anticipate issues before they become issues.

Many current issues could have been dealt with much earlier in the relationship, but weren?t. Avoiding talking about small issues often can lead to unresolved issues festering and expanding over time, only eventually to explode and become much bigger than they were initially. You may not want to rock the boat when things seem to be going well. You may believe that nothing good comes of raising complaints or issues.

The reality is, couples who seek to avoid conflict almost always end up in lots of it. Get into the habit of naming and flagging issues with each other, even when they are small. One of the ways to do this is to have a regular check-in to discuss current issues and assess where your relationship is going. Over time, this structure can help you feel more confident about your ability to effectively deal with conflict and disagreements.

Communication in a relationship requires constant attention. Start with the basics and establish rituals of communication and connection to ensure the longevity of your love and connection with each another.

Boeing is sticking with plans to speed up production of its 787 and sees no reason to drop the troubled lithium-ion batteries at the center of the plane's problems, CEO Jim McNerney said Wednesday.

A fire and emergency landing earlier this month, both involving the batteries, prompted regulators to ground Boeing's newest and highest-profile plane.

All Nippon Airways said Wednesday that it replaced batteries 10 times before the overheating problems surfaced earlier this month. McNerney said airlines have been replacing 787 batteries at a rate that's "slightly higher" than Boeing had expected. They've all been replaced for maintenance reasons, not for safety concerns, he said on a conference call.

Boeing said about 2,000 batteries of all types are replaced every year on its various planes.

U.S. aviation officials said they have asked Boeing for a full operating history of the batteries on the 787s.

McNerney said "good progress" is being made in finding the cause of the problems. But he didn't have a timeline for when the plane would get back in the air.

Boeing would like it to be soon.

The 787 lists for more than $200 million each, although discounts are common. Boeing has said it gets some 60 percent of the purchase price at the time of delivery. So deliveries are important to Boeing's cash flow, even though the planes themselves are money-losers for now because they still cost more to build than Boeing sells them for. Boeing projects that it will eventually break even on the 787.

From the outside, the 787 looks more or less like other planes at the airport. But the guts of the thing are completely different. The body is mostly carbon fiber ? sort of a high-tech plastic ? rather than aluminum. Electricity powers things on the 787 that would be fed by moving air on other planes. All that new technology took years of engineering to develop.

Boeing hasn't said how much it cost. Barclays Capital analyst Carter Copeland estimated that Boeing spent some $30 billion to $40 billion developing the 787. The whole company is worth about $56 billion. The 787 is "massively important" to Boeing, he said.

"The hope is that the technology will produce a long-tern return that was worth all of the risk," he said. "But any hope of that is dependent on having the program go well from here."

Boeing is still building 787s even though it has halted deliveries to customers. It's on track to ramp up production from five per month now to 10 per month by year end, McNerney said, and still aims to deliver at least 60 of the planes in this year.

He declined to talk discuss the possibility that regulators will require a complex fix that delays the production speed-up.

All big planes ? and especially the 787 ? are assembled from parts from suppliers all over the world, first into large sections at various facilities in the U.S., and finally by Boeing into a finished airplane. Speeding up or slowing down that process is complicated and takes months or years of advance warning to suppliers.

Asked what the 787 suppliers are being told, McNerney said, "No instructions to slow down, business as usual, and let's keep building airplanes and then let's ramp up as we'd planned."

Investigators are still trying to find out what caused the two battery incidents that grounded the 787. But McNerney said the company has learned nothing that makes him think they made a mistake in picking lithium-ion batteries. The 787 was the first plane to use the batteries so extensively. Boeing liked them because they charge quickly and hold more power than other batteries of the same weight.

The company declined to say how many of the batteries have been replaced. But Japan's All Nippon Airways said it had replaced batteries some 10 times because they didn't keep a charge properly or connections with electrical systems failed. Japan Airlines also said it had replaced some 787 batteries.

Among U.S. airlines, only United flies 787s. United Continental Holdings Inc. spokeswoman Christen David declined to say on Wednesday whether it has replaced batteries on any of its six planes.

Lot Polish Airlines said it had not had problems with the batteries. One of its two 787s remains stranded in Chicago because of the grounding order.

The FAA said on Wednesday that it had not been notified of ANA's battery replacements either by the airline or by Boeing. The FAA requirements are detailed and spell out a number of exceptions. In general they require a report only for malfunctions or defects that cause a serious problem such as a fire or an engine failure.

Boeing said it expects to deliver 635 to 645 commercial jets this year, up from 601 last year. The 46 787s that Boeing shipped to customers in 2012 helped it deliver more planes than European rival Airbus for the first time since 2003. Airbus expects to deliver more than 600 planes this year.

On Wednesday, Boeing reported a 2012 profit of $3.9 billion, or $5.11 per share, last year, a 3 percent decline from 2011. Revenue rose 19 percent to $81.7 billion. It predicted 2013 earnings of $5 to $5.20 per share, with revenue of $82 billion to $85 billion. The outlook assumes "no significant financial impact" from the 787 being out of service. Boeing said it would update its 2013 prediction if the assumption changes.

Shares of Chicago-based Boeing rose 94 cents to close at $74.59.
